November 28, 2008, Newsletter Issue #156: The Wilder Side of Michigan

Tip of the Week

When you think of Michigan, do you think of Detroit, Grand Rapids, or Lansing? Well, perhaps you should be thinking of the great outdoors instead. Michigan is literally surrounded by three of the Great Lakes, and the camping opportunities are nearly endless. All you need are some camping supplies and a map, and you'll find Michigan campgrounds close to just about every city and town.

A favorite spot for locals and visitors is the more isolated Upper Peninsula (known as the UP to most Michiganders). The UP is an island surrounded by the Great Lakes, and to reach it you have to travel over a bridge from the mainland. It's a camper's dream with lakes, waterfalls, lighthouses, and plenty of Michigan state and local campgrounds to choose from.

In the fall, enjoy fall colors, cider mills, and U-Pick apple orchards as part of your visit and the fishing is good just about any time of the year. The hardest part of your vacation may be packing the camping supplies and choosing between the numerous Michigan campgrounds!
